Pregnancy changed my body…a lot. Not only in size, but in shape, and in what I believe it to be capable of. I grew and birthed a human! And a chunky, clever, strong one at that.
For the first three months, I struggled to come to grips with my new physical reality. Getting dressed was difficult. Not only did I have to find clothes in new sizes, but they had to be breastfeeding friendly as well.
In April, I began a new round of Project 333, a minimalist fashion challenge started by Courtney Carver, where you choose just 33 items of clothing, accessories, shoes and outerwear to make up your outfits for the next three months.
I’ve done the challenge before, but this time I decided to take it a step further and track how many times I wore each piece in my capsule closet.
I’m about halfway through the challenge now, and I’ve already come to a surprising conclusion- I have a mom uniform. Most of the time, I wear jeans or jean shorts, and a relaxed fit tshirt in a soft summer shade. The only other thing I reach for as often as my jeans is my Wool& Brooklyn dress* in Wisteria- beautiful, comfy, and nursing-friendly.
In my mom uniform, I feel competent, comfy and cute. It’s such a relief to know I don’t have to try on dozens of things before going out- I don’t have time for that anyway! My mom uniform works for 80% of my activities. Plus, as my body changes, I can change the size of the items, but not have to start my style journey from scratch.
Being a mom has made minimalism more attractive to me then ever. Having a new baby is overwhelming, and I find myself decluttering and simplifying with a passion, so I can focus on what’s most important- time with my little family.
I encourage you to try tracking what you wear for a week or a month. I bet you have a go-to outfit formula too! Embracing it could make your day just a little easier. And if you need a helping hand to figure out what colours and styles will make you feel you best, I’m just an email away.
Awesome! I always love to read your writing.
